The GAC Emkoo is probably one of the most anticipated models we saw at the 2023 Manila International Auto Show (MIAS 2023). GAC’s done well for itself as of late, fielding an update to the GAC GS8, and then releasing the Empow to much acclaim in the compact sedan segment.
However, the Emkoo was unveiled, and with a price tag that starts at just P1,413,000, the model is a relative bargain for the specifications, features, and design that it carries. Let’s check it out and point out five reasons why it’s going to be a game-changer for the GAC brand in the Philippines.
Gorgeous styling
Once upon a time, and even today, some Chinese brands take inspiration from the successful nameplates and brands in the market, to create a model that will likely appeal to a wide audience. However, we feel that the Emkoo has carved out a bit of an identity of its own, especially for the Philippines. The design language is called “Diamond Cut” and the design philosophy may actually be one of the more unique ones out there.
The Emkoo stands out from the rest of the GAC lineup, whereas models like the GS4 and the GS8 are both more conventional when it comes to their shapes and design layout. The result is a, frankly, eye-catching and gorgeous design that we feel that only GAC knows how to do. The model features a very striking front-end with a grille that looks like it was lifted off a concept car. The rear may polarize a few, but we dig the high-mount position lights that also give this model a unique presence when viewed from the back.
Empow-erful engine
If the header of this paragraph is a little cringy, wait, let us explain. With 177 hp and 270 Nm of torque, it’s no secret that GAC has one of the more exciting powertrains out in the market today, but it’s also a little-known fact that its engine is also a similar mill to the GAC Empow, and we had a blast driving that sedan when we had it. Now, the Emkoo won’t be as exciting as the Empow, but it is surely going to give other competitors a run for their money with one of the highest torque figures, if not the highest torque figure, in its class, currently.
It’s not a hot hatch, but we reckon that this motor will be a memorable one on the first, second, third, or even the 50th drive. Paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission as well, and you have yourself a recipe that is sure to upset a few rivals in its class.
If the Empow is anything to go by, the Emkoo is sure to also tickle your senses while you drive or ride. Premium finishes and materials are all hallmarks of the GAC brand for its latest models, and the Emkoo is no exception. You will be surprised at the level of quality you can expect from GAC. Also impressive is the space of the GAC Emkoo. The model features a ton of space for front and rear passengers which is at par if not better than other competing nameplates.
The rear is also made more spacious thanks to the tall fast-back design, a compromise that seems as good as it is practical.
Apple CarPlay connectivity
Apple CarPlay comes at a premium with Chinese brands, unfortunately, which is another way of saying that not all Chinese cars have the pairing feature as standard. Luckily for Apple users, GAC offers this feature as a standard inclusion for all Emkoo variants in the lineup. The infotainment system will accommodate your Apple device, and allow for seamless navigation, music playback, and more all through the infotainment screen.
On top of connectivity, the Emkoo also comes with a range of features baked into the screen with camera outputs and more shining on a high-resolution display that comes in at 10.1 inches in diagonal size.
A worthwhile price
As mentioned earlier, the Emkoo is perhaps one of the best values in the market today. Prices start at just P1,413,000, but they can go up to just P1,553,000 for the top-spec variant. In relation to the rest of the market, the Emkoo is in a very middle-ground spot for the segment of compact crossovers. It’s not too expensive nor is it too cheap that you start losing features. Going toe-to-toe with the rest of its rivals, however, it may seem like GAC has got a tough war ahead. Other brands are also stepping up their game in the compact crossover segment, but we feel that GAC has a great fighter on its hands, and more so when you consider that it’s priced well and just right to take the fight to the bigger players in the market.
Whether or not that will translate into long-term success remains to be seen as the model is still very shiny and very new, at the time of writing. However, given how GAC’s totally invigorated and determined to make its mark in the Philippines, we can expect that this will be a cornerstone model for the GAC brand in the country.
