The GAC GS4 and the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro are some of the few Chinese contenders in the compact crossover segment. Despite being one of the most affordable options in its class, the two models still pack a good amount of features along with good looks and efficient performance. So if ever you’ve shortlisted both of these crossovers on your shopping list, which should you get? Allow us to help you make the right decision.
Exterior
In general, both the GS4 and Tiggo 7 Pro are aesthetically pleasing. In terms of dimensions, the GAC is longer and wider than the Chery, with it measuring 4,510 mm long, 1,852 mm wide, and 1,708 mm tall. The Tiggo 7 Pro, on the other hand, is taller than the GS4 given its dimensions of 4,500 mm in length, 1,824 mm in width, and 1,746 mm in height. While the GAC wins again in terms of ground clearance all thanks to its 190 mm versus the Chery’s 163 mm. Lastly, the Tiggo 7 Pro overtakes the GS4 in terms of wheelbase, with it measuring 2,670 mm versus the GAC’s 2,650 mm.
Both vehicles feature European-inspired looks, with the GS4 being more clean and straightforward while the Tiggo 7 Pro has a slightly edgier and curvaceous body styling. The two come with blinkers on each side mirror, two-tone alloy wheels, and silver-plated roof rails. Only the Tiggo 7 Pro comes with full-LED headlights and taillights while GS4 is only equipped with partial LEDs, as its projector headlights are only equipped with halogens.
Subjectively, the Tiggo 7 Pro does have a more attractive exterior that’s coupled with better features, plus, the lesser application of chrome got us, its designers should be given a raise for doing a good job. Though that doesn’t mean that the GS4 is way behind the league, it’s still one good-looking crossover and it will still attract those who want more chrome accents, along with a slightly boxier and simpler exterior design.
Winner: Chery Tiggo 7 Pro
Interior and technology
Inside, the two vehicles flaunt their well-appointed cabins that are treated with quality materials. The moment someone steps inside on both models, he/she will probably question if either of the two is a contender from a Chinese brand. Aside from the plush cabin, space is also good for passengers and even for cargo loading. With the second-row seats folded, the GS4 reveals 1,410-liters while the Tiggo 7 Pro goes a bit higher with 1,500-liters of cargo space.
Features are also generous on both vehicles, the two come with touchscreen infotainment systems for in-car entertainment, however, only the Tiggo 7 Pro features Apple CarPlay. The Chery’s system doesn’t have Android Auto, but it still has QD Link for Android users. On the other hand, the GAC’s infotainment is still quite good, with it having various multimedia functions such as AM/FM, Bluetooth, auxiliary, and iPod connectivity.
Other standard convenience features include automatic climate control, steering wheel-mounted controls, cruise control, leather upholstered seats, rear air vents, a sunroof, and many more. Digital gauges, a power tailgate, and a wireless phone charger are exclusive of the Tiggo 7 Pro.
Both cabins are indeed well-executed with quality materials and packed with features, however, the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro managed to stand out all thanks to some quirky additions as mentioned. That said, we hereby declare it as the winner of this round.
Winner: Chery Tiggo 7 Pro
Power
Both contenders are powered by a small yet mighty 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine. For starters, the Tiggo 7 Pro’s motor churns out 145 hp and 210 Nm of torque mated to a 9-speed CVT. The GS4’s power mill, on the other hand, produces a healthier 151 hp and 235 Nm of torque mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox. Both are only available in FWD. On paper, the GAC does stand strong in terms of power, though the Chery still wins given that its transmission has more virtual gear ratios to shift on and the fact that it is a more modern type of transmission. Although, user preference is kind, so that gearbox of the GS4 could make for a better driving companion if you want hard gears transferring power to your wheels.
Winner: Chery Tiggo 7 Pro
Safety
Standard safety and security features on both vehicles include ABS, EBD, stability control, parking sensors, brake assist, hill-start assist, hill-descent control, Smart-keyless entry, and ISOFIX child seat anchors, a tire-pressure monitoring system, and a 360-degree camera for easier maneuvering. On paper, both compact crossovers are well-equipped with safety features, whichever model you get will surely give you a lot for what you’re actually paying for. That said, we shall end this round with a tie.
Winner: Tie
Price
In terms of pricing, the GAC GS4 wins over the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro, with it retailing at just P1,168,000 while the Tiggo 7 Pro sits a bit higher at P1,198,000 with its two-tone variant exterior color requiring an extra P25,000.
Winner: GAC GS4
Verdict
The GAC GA4 and the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro are two competitive entries in the segment. Both serve as a good testament to why many people should break the stereotyping among Chinese car brands. Aside from the looks, these compact crossovers are capable of providing the driver and passenger with comfort and performance that won’t exceed your gas budget.
After thoroughly assessing both vehicles, the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro successfully won our hearts given its more imposing exterior, its high-tech cabin that’s richer in features, and the small yet mighty engine. All of that can be yours at such an affordable price.
