Toyota is the true trendsetter in bringing Hybrid technology to the masses with the introduction of the Toyota Prius in 1997. Dubbed the Hybrid Synergy Drive, Toyota has perfected this technology throughout the years, with the Japanese marque offering this technology to a range of vehicles, including their higher-end Lexus vehicles. It is all thanks to Toyota that a lot of manufacturers are dabbling into hybrid technology, with supercars even optimizing this technology to deliver the most mind-boggling performance known to humankind.
If you need more information, Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) combine an efficient gasoline engine and an electric motor that seamlessly work together to maximize driving performance while minimizing fuel consumption and emissions.
Currently, Toyota is the only manufacturer available locally that offers a hybrid lineup in a range of different vehicles and categories, and that is where we will be focusing, as Toyota offers a hybrid lineup that can suit nearly any lifestyle you demand today.
Toyota RAV4 HEV
The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid stands out in the automotive market for several reasons. First and foremost, its hybrid powertrain sets it apart from its competitors. By combining a gasoline engine with an electric motor, the RAV4 Hybrid delivers exceptional fuel efficiency, making it an eco-friendly choice for environmentally conscious drivers. With its Hybrid Synergy Drive technology, the vehicle seamlessly transitions between electric and gasoline power or uses both simultaneously, optimizing performance and minimizing emissions. Best of all, it delivers a combined 215 hp and 221 Nm of torque, which is plenty.
Safety is a paramount concern, and the RAV4 Hybrid incorporates advanced safety features. Equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, it includes a range of driver-assistance technologies like pre-collision braking, lane departure alert, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. These features prioritize safety and contribute to accident prevention, further boosting the vehicle's appeal.
In addition to its impressive performance and safety features, the RAV4 Hybrid offers a spacious and versatile interior. It provides ample room for passengers and cargo, and the rear seats can be folded down to create even more storage space when needed, making this compact crossover a perfect road trip and adventure vehicle.
Toyota Camry HEV
The Camry has always been the quintessential executive car, delivering the utmost comfort and ride quality to its endearing executives wafting their way to their business meetings. While executive sedans are a dying breed locally, Toyota Motor Philippines is adamant that adding a hybrid powertrain could revive the executive sedan segment once again.
Thanks to Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive, this makes an already comfortable land yacht even more refined due to its seamless transition between electric and gasoline power, which combined makes an impressive 208 hp and 221 Nm of torque while retaining excellent fuel economy.
Inside, the Camry Hybrid boasts a well-crafted interior with high-quality materials and thoughtful design elements. It offers a spacious cabin that accommodates both the driver and passengers comfortably. The seats provide ample support, and the interior is designed to minimize noise, ensuring a refined and serene driving or riding (if you are an executive) experience.
Toyota Corolla Altis HEV
The Corolla Altis Hybrid's efficient hybrid powertrain, reliable performance, advanced safety features, spacious interior, and reputation for reliability make it a standout choice in the compact sedan segment. It combines fuel efficiency with a comfortable and safe driving experience, making it an appealing option for those seeking a reliable and eco-friendly vehicle without compromising on practicality or comfort.
During our testing, we were able to get up to 28 km/L with free-flowing traffic to Tagaytay and 14.2 km/L in heavy city traffic. Very impressive, to say the least. While figures are nothing to write home about with 121 hp and 142 Nm of torque, its hybrid powertrain gives added smoothness and refinement that its other compact sedan rivals cannot offer.
Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid
The Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid is a compact crossover that stands out for its blend of fuel efficiency, versatility, and modern features. As a hybrid vehicle, it offers excellent fuel economy, combining a gasoline engine with an electric motor to maximize efficiency and reduce emissions. This makes it an ideal choice for those seeking an eco-friendly and economical mode of transportation.
One of the key strengths of the Corolla Cross Hybrid is its versatility. With its spacious interior and flexible cargo space, it can comfortably accommodate passengers and their belongings. Whether it's a daily commute, a weekend adventure, or a family outing, the Corolla Cross Hybrid adapts to various lifestyles and needs.
In addition, the Corolla Cross Hybrid incorporates modern features and technologies. It includes a range of advanced safety systems via its Toyota Safety Sense that features collision mitigation, lane departure alert, and adaptive cruise control, ensuring a secure and confident driving experience. The infotainment system provides seamless smartphone integration, intuitive controls, and optional upgrades for enhanced connectivity and entertainment.
Overall, the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid distinguishes itself with its fuel efficiency, versatility, and an array of modern features, making it an appealing option for individuals and families in search of a reliable, eco-friendly, well-equipped, and, we dare say, a great looking compact crossover.
Toyota Yaris Cross HEV
The Yaris Cross HEV is the B-segment competitor of Toyota. The brand's aim for this model is to introduce hybrid technology to the masses at a more accessible price point.
It combines style, efficiency, comfort, and versatility in a compelling package, making it an excellent choice for city dwellers seeking a fuel-efficient and modern hybrid crossover. It's truly the perfect recipe for Philippine roads.
The Yaris Cross HEV also has the full suite of features from Toyota Safety Sense, so you also have peace of mind that the car will keep you and your occupants safe at all times.
We were able to take it on a short drive during a media walkaround, and we were wholly impressed.
Toyota Zenix HEV
The Toyota Innova has solidified itself as an institution in many Filipino households. It is reliable, versatile, and can be used for nearly any situation you can think of without worries. However, Toyota decided to make an MPV for the future, and the Zenix is our glimpse into that.
The Zenix possesses the same versatile traits as the Innova, but combines added safety, technology, and the addition of a hybrid powertrain. It's now in a unibody chassis which promises added comfort, and is much more refined to drive and ride.
Toyota Alphard HEV
The Alphard has gained a lot in popularity here in the Philippines in the past several years. It's luxurious, stylish, and very comfortable. It has become a favorite, and the local sales numbers speak for themselves. Now, Toyota has released the all-new Alphard and brings those aforementioned comfort and luxury to a whole new level, but this time with an electrified powertrain. It promises much better fuel efficiency than the V6 it replaces but retains the same level of power and refinement.
