Changan Philippines presents its newest subcompact crossover, the all-new 2022 CS35 Plus. Updated for the new model year, the CS35 gets some key updates that give it a significant boost in value over its predecessor while still retaining the quality and refinement expected from the Changan brand.
The all-new model looks stunning on the outside and welcoming on the inside. Gone are the boxy lines that dominated the previous model, and they are instead replaced by sleek hardware and brand new panels. Perhaps the most striking design feature of the new Changan CS35 is the LED DRLs and taillights that extend the entire width of the front grille and the tailgate.
On top of that, you get sporty red accents that give off an athletic look. While it’s not apparent on the Draco Red, the Wanderlust White and Wolf Grey paintjobs create a nice contrast of color for the red accents to stand out. To add to the already gorgeous package, Changan Philippines fitted the CS35 Plus with a set of two-tone 18-inch alloy wheels that complement the vehicle’s stance and serve as a nice contrast to the squared-off wheel arches.
Moving onto the interior, the new CS35 Plus gets a red and black two-tone color theme that is augmented by premium finishes and materials on the dashboard. Chagan says everything is within arms reach and ergonomic. The D-shaped steering wheel allows for a sporty look and a sure grip on the wheel while driving and it is also adorned with a myriad of buttons that allow the driver to interact with the adaptive cruise control, digital instrument display, and infotainment system without taking a hand off the wheel. The crowning feature of the dashboard is the infotainment system that’s right next to the all-digital gauge cluster, which is reminiscent of high-end European vehicles. Underneath that is the auto climate control system that also includes a PM 0.1 filter. Rear AC vents are also present for the passengers at the back for extended cabin comfort and cooling on hot days. The rear AC vent is available for the mid and high-end variants of the CS35 Plus.
A 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity and smartphone mirroring is also present. Wireless charging pads are also built-in along with two USB ports. You can cruise along and listen to your favorite tunes without wind and tire noise creeping into the cabin thanks to Changan’s strategic noise isolation tech called Deap Sea Silence Technology, which isolates and absorbs exterior nose thanks to Changan’s application of 50 noise dampeners in 20 strategic cabin areas. Impressive, considering that the brand managed to fit in a panoramic sunroof. Cargo space extends up to 950 liters with the rear seats folded down, but with the full five-passenger load, the CS35 can still hold up to 403 liters of cargo.
As for its engine, the Changan CS35 comes equipped with a 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engine that makes 160 hp and 260 Nm of torque, making it one of the more powerful motors in the subcompact segment of cars. Changan allowed us to test this engine around the block, and it delivers nice low-down torque while retaining a fun-to-drive personality. The motor is otherwise paired with a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission that shifts well under load and smoothly while crawling. Drive modes are also available that enhance the sportiness of the CS35. Settings like Sport, Comfortable, and Standard are on offer to allow the driver to feel more of the road or less of it by tailoring the steering wheel’s feedback and weight, on top of making the throttle sharper to respond.
Safety systems include the Changan Safe-tech System which includes adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, front collision warning, and also for safety and convenience, a panoramic camera system with 3D display capabilities. The CS35 can be configured with up to six airbags which includes driver, passenger, side and curtain airbags for maximum coverage.
Changan Philippines have brought out a great car, but what’s even more surprising is its price tag that starts at just P898,000 for the Lite variant, P969,000 for the Hype variant, and P999,000 for the Luxe variant. The top-spec trim doesn't even hit the seven-digit mark, and it’s a prime contender for the best cars under a million Philippine pesos. Changan also offers a 5-year 150,000 km warranty along with Changan Pacesetter roadside assistance and towing service along with Changan’s Fastlane 60-minute service guarantee with free PMS Labor for the first year or the first 20,000 km.
