The GT is MG's latest sedan offering for the Philippine market. The GT is a sport sedan with two variant options, the Alpha and the Sport, both featuring a 1.5 liter inline-4 engine, with dual overhead cams and 16 valves. The Alpha is naturally-aspirated, churning out 112 horsepower, while the Sport is turbocharged with Dual Variable Valve Timing, giving it 159 horsepower. For the GT's drivetrain, you can get an 8-speed i-CVT transmission with a manual mode for the Alpha, or a 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission with paddle shifters for the performance-oriented Sport.
Both come with MG's fighter jet-inspired cockpit design as well as a 12.3-inch virtual display instrument cluster and a 7-inch LCD display. A 10-inch HD touchscreen display also comes as standard for both variants, equipped with Apple Carplay and Android Auto.
Launch
MG unveiled the GT in December 2022 as part of its appreciation night event for its dealers. Although the GT has been officially unveiled here in the Philippines, it is not on sale yet as MG have not officially launched the GT. However, MG has provided buyers with the introductory prices of the GT with a price tag of P938,888 for the Alpha variant and P1,098,888 for the range-topping Sport.
Platform, Chassis and Powertrain
Powering the MG GT are two 1.5-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engines. The first is a naturally aspirated 1.5 that pushes out 112 hp and 150 Nm of torque. It sends power to the front via an 8-speed i-CVT. The second is a turbocharged 1.5-liter that pushes out 159 hp and 250 Nm of torque. It sends power to the front wheels via a 7-speed DCT. The sedan rides on a MacPherson Strut suspension at the front and a torsion beam setup at the rear. Stopping power comes from the front and rear disc brakes. The MG GT also has two wheel sizes available with the Alpha model getting 16-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 205/55 series tires and the turbo model getting a bigger set with 17-inch alloys as well. It is wrapped in 215/50 series tires.
Technology Features
Both GT variants come equipped with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster along with a 10-inch tablet-style infotainment system with 6 speakers. The head unit is capable of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Other features within the GT is an electronic parking brake with auto hold, a sun roof, and a smart keyless entry with push-button start-stop. The air-conditioning system is also equipped with an advanced air purifier system. Exclusive to the Sport variant is a 360 degree camera which can be accesed through the car's head unit.
Exterior
Appearance wise, the GT is able to convey its sporty characteristics well. The GT strikes a good balance between aggressive styling and sleek lines that make it look sporty, not too loud and not too restrained. The front is occupied by the GT's swept back headlights and massive front grille named by MG as a "Digital Flaming Grille," this grille is flanked by two big air vents at the side adding to the sporty look. At the side, a chrome strip at the top of the doors outline the GT's silhouette. Moving to the rear are the taillights with three vertical highlights complemented by an upturned ducktail spoiler integrated in the trunk.
Interior
The interior of the GT features a stealthy atmosphere, made possible through the intelligent mixture of dark plastic and contrasting trim. Bucket seats are there for the driver and front passenger giving adequate support. Behind the black three spoke steering wheel is a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Mounted at the center is a 10-inch tablet-style infotainment syste. The dashboard is designed with fighter jet cockpits in mind, visible in the gear knob and the aviation-grade aluminum accents.
Safety
The GT is equipped with the following safety features and driver aids. Both variants are equipped with ABS and electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), an electronic stability program (ESP), electronic parking brake with an auto hold feature, as well as cornering brake control. Exclusive to the Sport are driving aids which include, Lane Departure warning system (LDW), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), and Intelligent High-beam control.
