Toyota GR86 Overview
The Toyota 86 has been reborn as the GR 86. Now in its second generation, the famed sports coupe is better than ever thanks to a number of enhancements all around. It’s still a result of a joint effort between Toyota and Subaru, the latter of which produces the GR 86’s twin—the BRZ.
As a distinctive Japanese sports coupe, the Toyota GR 86 boasts a stellar power-to-weight ratio, racing-inspired proportions, and a modern interior with premium technology. New equipment for this generation includes an aluminum roof, hood, and front fenders for lower overall weight and center of gravity.
As for power, the GR 86 packs a Subaru-derived, 2.4-liter, naturally aspirated, four-cylinder, FA24D Boxer engine that puts out 234 hp and 250 Nm of torque. Transmission options include a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic gearbox.
- Launch
-
As one vehicle could not exist without the other, it was Subaru who first launched the second-generation BRZ. It did so on November 18, 2020, with sales starting about a year later. Toyota introduced the badge-engineered GR 86 on April 5, 2021. Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) quietly launched the 2023 GR 86 in August 2022 at a starting price of P2,328,000 for the manual version.
- Platform, Chassis and Powertrain
-
Jointly developed by Subaru and Toyota, the GR 86 rides on a heavily modified Subaru Global Platform (SAP) that also underpins the BRZ. The previous-generation models used an architecture derived from the Subaru Impreza. The current GR 86 benefits from adopting the SAP, featuring a claimed 50-percent added torsional rigidity versus its predecessor.
The Toyota GR 86 follows the classic front-engined rear-wheel-drive layout that allows for a balanced chassis. Power comes from a 2.4-liter FA24D Boxer engine that produces 234 hp at 7,000 RPM with 205 Nm of torque at 3,700 RPM. The gearbox selection is either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters.

- Exterior
-
The exterior of the second-generation Toyota GR 86 features a large opening in the front with auto-leveling projector LED headlights, LED turn signals, and LED DRLs rounding out the array. The sports coupe is low to the ground and features a stance that is ready to pounce into action. The hood is long since the cabin is pushed all the way to the back, creating a fastback appeal. Meanwhile, the rear taillights are also an LED cluster, while a window defogger and decklid-mounted LED stop light and backup light can be found at the rear.
- Interior
-
The interior of the GR 86 features a 2+2 seating configuration, with two sports seats at the front and two regular seats at the rear. The Toyota GR 86 features a driver-centric cabin with all-black leather touchpoints, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, a leather-wrapped parking brake handle, and more. It features a premium dashboard and center console with silver-finished toggles as well as foldable rear seats for additional cargo space.
- Safety
-
Toyota packed a veritable set of both passive and active safety features into the GR 86. These include seven SRS airbags, ABS with EBD, vehicle stability control, traction control, hill start assist control, a backup camera, and an anti-theft system with an alarm and immobilizer.
